Trip highlights

  • A three-fort traverse — Alang, Madan and Kulang — in a single 2-day expedition
  • Madan Fort's near-vertical rock climb, widely considered the toughest section of the three forts
  • Technical rock climbing and rappelling sections guided by experienced trek leaders
  • A night of camping, bonfire and stargazing between the Madan and Alang summits
  • Sunrise views on Day 2 before the climb to Kulang Fort and its historical ruins

Overview

Alang (4,852 ft), Madan (4,900 ft) and Kulang (4,825 ft) form one of the most demanding fort traverses in the Sahyadris, rising from the Kalsubai range near Ambewadi village in Igatpuri taluka. Madan Fort in particular is known for a near-vertical rock climb, while the route between forts involves genuine rock climbing and rappelling rather than just steep walking trails — this is widely regarded as one of Maharashtra's most technical treks.

This 2-day itinerary climbs Madan Fort and Alang Fort on Day 1, camping overnight between the two with a bonfire and stargazing session, before summiting Kulang Fort on Day 2 and returning to Igatpuri. Ropes, harnesses and technical guidance are handled by the trek leaders at each climbing and rappelling section — a good baseline fitness level and a willingness to push through a demanding two days are essential.

Hardest trek I've done in the Sahyadris, hands down. The climb up Madan Fort is no joke — genuine rock climbing, not just a steep trail. Guides were excellent with the ropes and kept everyone safe.

Camping between Madan and Alang under the stars after that first brutal day was the reward we needed. Three forts in two days is intense but the AMK reputation is well earned.

Kulang Fort on day two has the longest approach and by then everyone is tired, but the historical ruins at the top make it worthwhile. Not for first-time trekkers — come prepared.

Rappelling sections were the highlight for me. Trek leaders were clearly experienced with technical terrain, which mattered a lot given how exposed some of the climbs are.
