Overview

Harihar Fort is best known for one thing: 117 rock-cut steps carved directly into an 80-degree cliff face, with hand-carved niches for grips, climbed single file, facing the rock. It's the most thrilling staircase climb in the Sahyadris — exposed but manageable, and unlike almost any other fort trek in Maharashtra. At just 3,676 ft with a 2-3 hour ascent, Harihar is also one of the very few forts accessible enough to camp at the actual summit.

This is the summit camping version: you climb the steps in the afternoon, timed to reach the plateau just before sunset, then camp right on the fort — tents pre-pitched near the Hanuman and Shiva temples and the ancient storage caves. Watch the sun drop behind the Sahyadri ridgeline with Bhaskargad and Brahmagiri turning gold and crimson, eat dinner under the stars, sit around a bonfire, then fall asleep on an open plateau with zero light pollution. Sunrise the next morning needs no climb at all — you're already at the highest point.

  3. 1:00 pm

    Lunch at base village

Hot Maharashtrian veg lunch — dal, sabzi, chapati, rice. Jain food on request. Eat fully, the staircase deserves a solid fuel base.

  4. 1:30 – 2:00 pm

  5. 2:00 pm sharp

    Trek begins from Nirgudpada

  6. 3:30 – 4:00 pm

    Reach Machi (plateau)

The halfway point. Rest and hydrate — the full staircase is now visible directly above, carved into the sheer cliff face.

  7. 4:00 – 4:45 pm

The 117 steps — the climb

Face the rock from the first step. Use the carved niches for hands and feet, single file, no overtaking. Through an overhang, a stone door, and a rock-cut passage to the summit — the most thrilling climb in Maharashtra.

  8. 5:00 – 5:30 pm

Arrive Harihar summit — camp setup

Tents pre-pitched on the plateau. Evening snacks and hot chai waiting. Visit the Hanuman and Shiva temples, bastions, cisterns and storage caves.

  9. 6:15 – 7:00 pm

Sunset from the summit (3,676 ft)

One of the most dramatic sunset viewpoints in the Nashik district — Bhaskargad silhouetted against the glow, Brahmagiri turning gold then crimson, Vaitarna reservoir glowing orange below.

  10. 7:30 – 8:30 pm

    Bonfire + group activities

Songs, stories and games around the campfire on the ancient fort plateau. Solo travelers very welcome.

  11. 9:00 pm

  12. 10:30 pm – 1:00 am

    Stargazing from the summit

  13. 5:30 – 6:00 am (Day 2)

Wake up — sunrise at the summit

No climb needed — step out of your tent and watch the horizon catch fire. Photography golden window: 5:50-6:40 am.

  14. 6:00 – 7:00 am

    Sunrise + explore the fort

360° morning panorama: Bhaskargad, Anjaneri, Brahmagiri, Utwad fort, Vaitarna reservoir. Visit the temples at first light and explore the bastions and cisterns.

  15. 7:00 – 7:30 am

  16. 8:00 am

    The 117 steps — descent

Requires extra care — face the rock going down, always. No rushing, one person at a time on narrow sections. The trek leader descends first to guide foot placement.

The 117 steps are exactly as thrilling as everyone says — facing the rock the whole way up with your heart pounding. Camping right on the summit afterward with that sunset over Bhaskargad made it unforgettable.

Easily the most unique staircase I've ever climbed. The trek leader was excellent about pacing the group and keeping everyone calm on the exposed sections. Stargazing on the plateau afterward was a bonus I didn't expect.

Genuinely nervous about the steps beforehand but it was well managed — single file, niches for grip, no rushing. Waking up already at the summit for sunrise with zero climbing needed was a great touch.

Went solo and felt completely safe throughout. The descent the next morning needs real care — more than the climb up — but the whole experience of camping on a 17th-century fort plateau is worth every step.

FAQ

They're steep (about 80°) and exposed, but manageable with the trek leader's guidance — you climb single file, facing the rock, using carved hand and foot niches. It's thrilling rather than technical, but full attention is required, especially on the descent.

Terms & Conditions

On the 117 steps: always face the rock, both going up and down. Use the carved niches for hands and feet. Single file — no overtaking at any point. Monsoon steps become slippery with moss, so extra grip is required, and descent is harder than ascent — take your time. Alcohol is strictly prohibited on the trek. No mobile network at the base village or fort — download offline maps before you leave network coverage. Emergency: ERSS 112. Nearest hospital: Sub-District Hospital, Trimbakeshwar. Police: Harsul Station, Trimbakeshwar. Withdraw cash before the trek — the nearest ATMs are in Nashik or Trimbakeshwar.
