  • Home by evening — overnight transport included both ways

Overview

Harihar Fort is best known for one thing: 117 rock-cut steps carved directly into an 80-degree cliff face, with hand-carved niches for grips, climbed single file, facing the rock. Built in the 12th century to guard the Gonda Ghat trade route, the fort's triangular prism shape has three nearly vertical faces — including the 'Scottish Kada', first climbed by Doug Scott in 1986.

This is the same-day version: you travel overnight Friday, rest for a few hours at Nirgudpada, then climb up and back down in a single Saturday — exploring the fort's Hanuman and Shiva temples, ancient cisterns and bastions along the way — before heading home the same evening. No tents, no sleeping bags, no overnight stay on the fort. If you'd rather camp on the summit for sunset, stargazing and sunrise, the separate Harihar Fort Camping Trek covers that.

Perfect if you can't spare two days — the 117 steps are every bit as thrilling as people say, and you're still home for dinner. Trek leader was excellent about the staircase safety briefing.

Tougher than expected on so little sleep, but doable. The rest period at base before the climb helped a lot. Views from the summit were worth every step.

Took the Kasara train option and it was smooth and well organised. Loved not having to carry a sleeping bag or tent — much lighter day pack.

The descent really is harder than the climb up — go slow and face the rock like they tell you to. Otherwise a fantastic single-day adventure.

FAQ

This Day Trek is the same-day version — you travel overnight Friday, climb up and back down on Saturday, and are home that evening. No camping gear needed. The Camping Trek adds an overnight stay with tents on the summit plateau, timed for sunset, a bonfire, stargazing and sunrise.

Terms & Conditions

The 117 rock-cut steps incline at 75-80 degrees — face the rock both going up and coming down. Use the carved niches for hand and foot holds. Single file at all times, no overtaking on the staircase. In monsoon, steps are slippery with moss — grip doubly firm. Descent is harder than ascent — take your time, face the rock, never rush. No mobile network at the base village or fort. Emergency: ERSS 112. Nearest hospital: Sub-District Hospital, Trimbakeshwar. Police: Harsul Police Station, Trimbakeshwar. ATM: Nashik or Trimbakeshwar. Roads to base are in bad condition — allow an extra 30-45 minutes.
