Trip highlights

  • Climb the legendary 117 rock-cut steps by headlamp — an atmospheric, genuinely different experience from the daytime ascent
  • Sunrise at the summit — reach the plateau just as the sky turns gold over Bhaskargad and Brahmagiri
  • Explore the Hanuman and Shiva temples, ancient water cisterns, bastions and storage caves in the morning light
  • Spot the 'Scottish Kada' — the sheer vertical face first climbed by Doug Scott in 1986
  • Same-day return — no camping gear to carry or pack

Overview

Harihar Fort is best known for one thing: 117 rock-cut steps carved directly into an 80-degree cliff face, with hand-carved niches for grips, climbed single file, facing the rock. Built in the 12th century to guard the Gonda Ghat trade route, the fort's triangular prism shape has three nearly vertical faces — including the 'Scottish Kada', first climbed by Doug Scott in 1986.

This is the night-trek version: you travel overnight, rest briefly at Nirgudpada, then climb the staircase by headlamp in the pre-dawn dark, timed to reach the summit right as the sky turns gold over Bhaskargad and Brahmagiri. Breakfast and a full fort exploration follow at sunrise, then you descend and head home the same day — no tents, no overnight stay on the fort. If you'd rather camp on the summit for sunset and stargazing, the separate Harihar Fort Camping Trek covers that; for a daytime climb, see the Harihar Fort Day Trek.

Freshen up. Trek leader safety briefing on the staircase: face the rock, use the niches, single file, pace yourself, no rushing.

  4. 4:30 am

Climbing the 117 steps by headlamp was a completely different experience from the day trek — quieter, more focused. Reaching the top right at sunrise made the early wake-up worth it.

Genuinely nervous doing the staircase in the dark but the trek leader's headlamp beam and calm pacing made it feel completely manageable. The sunrise view was spectacular.

Tougher on minimal sleep than the day version, but the pre-dawn forest section was atmospheric in a way daytime just isn't. Would recommend to anyone who's already done the day trek.

Went from Kasara via the train option and it was smooth. Watching Bhaskargad catch first light from the summit, right after that staircase climb, is something I won't forget.

FAQ

This Night Trek climbs the 117 steps before dawn so you reach the summit right at sunrise, then returns home the same day — no camping gear needed. The Day Trek climbs in daylight and reaches the summit mid-morning instead. The Camping Trek adds an overnight stay with tents on the summit plateau, timed for sunset rather than sunrise.

Terms & Conditions

The 117 rock-cut steps incline at 75-80 degrees — face the rock both going up and coming down. Use the carved niches for hand and foot holds. Single file at all times, no overtaking on the staircase. Headlamps are essential since the ascent happens in darkness or pre-dawn light. In monsoon, steps are slippery with moss — grip doubly firm. Descent is harder than ascent — take your time, face the rock, never rush. No mobile network at the base village or fort. Emergency: ERSS 112. Nearest hospital: Sub-District Hospital, Trimbakeshwar. Police: Harsul Police Station, Trimbakeshwar. Roads to base are in bad condition — allow an extra 30-45 minutes.
