Harishchandragad is one of the Sahyadris' most storied forts — a 4,670 ft summit captured by the Marathas in 1747, crowned by Konkankada, a massive concave cliff that drops vertically into the Konkan valley below. The fort also holds the Kedareshwar Cave, an ancient rock-cut temple with a Shivlinga surrounded by ice-cold water year-round, the Harishchandreshwar Temple with its medieval carvings beside the sacred Saptateertha Pushkarini lake, and Taramati Peak — the fort's highest point and one of the top 10 highest peaks in Maharashtra.
This is the night-trek version of the Harishchandragad experience: you travel overnight, rest briefly at Pachnai, then climb in pitch darkness before dawn so you're standing at Konkankada right as the sun comes up over the Konkan valley — clouds pooling below you as the sky turns gold. Breakfast happens twice: a quick gear-up meal at base, and a proper hot breakfast on the summit plateau after sunrise. You're back home the same evening. No tents, no overnight stay on the fort. If you'd rather camp overnight at Konkankada, the separate Harishchandragad Camping Trek covers that; if you'd rather climb in daylight, see the Harishchandragad Day Trek.
Itinerary for your selected pickup city
9:00 – 10:15 pm (Fri)
Board bus at Mumbai pickup points
Depart from Borivali (SGNP Gate), Andheri (WEH), Dadar East or Thane for the overnight drive to Pachnai. Carry dinner — there's no proper food stop until Pachnai.
~2:30 – 3:00 am
Arrive Pachnai (2,592 ft) — rest
Freshen up and get the trek leader's safety briefing, with Konkankada rules emphasized. Rest for about an hour before gearing up.
~4:30 – 4:45 am
Light breakfast + gear up
Poha, upma and chai at the Pachnai dhaba. Fill 3-4 L of water, switch on headlamps, and pass the mandatory trekking-shoes check.
5:00 am
Night trek begins from Pachnai
Depart in darkness. A forest trail (45-60 min) — cool air, birds waking, streams audible — gives way to a steeper rocky ascent (60-90 min) as fort walls appear. Kedareshwar Cave is passed on the right and visited on the way down.
~7:30 – 8:00 am
Reach Harishchandreshwar Temple + plateau
Rest at the ancient rock-cut temple and the sacred Saptateertha Pushkarini lake as the fort plateau opens up in the early light.
~8:30 – 9:00 am
Sunrise at Konkankada
The most dramatic viewpoint in the Sahyadris at the best possible time — cloud inversions rise from the Konkan valley as the sun comes up over Ratangad, Kalsubai, Alang, Madan and Kulang. Stay behind the safety barriers at all times.
9:30 – 10:00 am
Taramati Peak (4,670 ft)
A 15-20 minute walk from Konkankada to Maharashtra's highest trekking summit, with a 360° panorama in full morning light.
10:00 – 11:00 am
Breakfast at the top + explore fort
A full hot breakfast on the plateau, followed by a visit to Kedareshwar Cave — a knee-deep icy water crossing to see the massive Shivlinga inside.
11:00 am
Descent begins
A 2.5-3 hour descent via the same Pachnai route — the trail is steeper going down, so trekking poles are useful over the wet, rocky sections.
1:30 – 2:00 pm
Reach Pachnai — lunch
A veg thali at the Pachnai dhaba before boarding transport for home.
2:30 pm
Depart for home
Via Igatpuri-Kasara-NH160. Arrive Mumbai approximately 6:00-7:00 pm.
Borivali (SGNP Gate) – 9:00 pm, Andheri (WEH) – 9:20 pm, Dadar East – 9:45 pm, Thane – 10:15 pm. Alternative: Train 95423 from CSMT 8:44 pm to Kasara 11:04 pm, then jeep to Pachnai.
Route: Mumbai > NH160 > Kasara > Igatpuri > Ghoti > Sangamner > Rajur > Kotul > Pachnai, about 5.5 hours (210 km). Roads are in poor condition after Ghoti.
Harishchandragad Solo Trek — Camping at Konkankada (Complete Guide)
Beautiful Sunrise at Taramati Peak of Harishchandragad
Trekking shoes are mandatory — participants in sandals or running shoes are turned back with no refund. The ascent happens in darkness or pre-dawn light, so headlamps are non-negotiable. Mobile network is patchy and unreliable, especially near Konkankada. Stay behind safety barriers at Konkankada at all times, do not sit on the edge, and keep children accompanied — wind gusts can be sudden and strong. MMRCC rescue helpline: 7620-230-231. Emergency: 112.
