Overview

Kalsubai, at 1,646 m (5,400 ft), is the highest peak in Maharashtra — the "Everest of Maharashtra." This camping trek is the relaxed way to experience it: a daytime pickup, lunch at Bari base village, and an easy-paced afternoon climb timed to reach camp by sunset.

Camp on a plateau just below the summit (or a halfway camp for beginners and families). Watch the sun sink over the Sahyadri ridge, gather around a bonfire, enjoy an unlimited home-cooked Maharashtrian dinner, and then stargaze under some of the darkest skies near Mumbai — the Milky Way is visible on clear new-moon nights.

Wake for a short walk to the summit for a 360-degree sunrise over Bhandardara, Ratangad, Harishchandragad, Alang, Madan and Kulang, before descending on Day 2.

Itinerary & Map

Itinerary for your selected pickup city

  1. 8:00 – 9:15 AM (Day 1)

Pickup across Mumbai — AC bus departs

Board the AC bus at Borivali, Andheri, Dadar or Thane. Tea and biscuits served on the bus; carry breakfast if you get hungry early.

  2. ~10:30 AM

Kasara Ghat & Igatpuri — scenic drive

The bus climbs the Kasara Ghat with stunning Western Ghats views. Igatpuri is the last ATM and phone network before base. Quick comfort stop.

  3. 12:00 – 1:00 PM

Arrive Bari village — base camp

~153 km from Mumbai (~3.5–4 hrs). Freshen up, meet the trek leader and team, and enjoy the first views of Kalsubai above the village.

  4. 1:00 – 1:30 PM

    Lunch at Bari village

A hot Maharashtrian veg thali — dal, sabzi, chapati, rice, pickle. Jain food on request. Fuel up for the climb.

  5. 1:30 – 2:00 PM

    Rest + gear up

Change into trekking shoes, fill 3 litres of water, and get the route/camp/ladder briefing. Camping gear goes up on mules.

  6. 2:00 PM sharp

    Trek begins from Bari village

A relaxed 3–3.5 hr ascent timed for camp by sunset — paddy fields, then shaded forest, then rocky highland with widening Sahyadri views.

  7. 3:30 – 4:00 PM

    Iron ladder section

Five near-vertical iron ladders with chains and railings — the highlight of the trail. Climb single-file, 30–45 min for the group. A plateau then opens with the Bhandardara reservoir spread below.

  8. 5:00 – 5:30 PM

    Arrive campsite — settle in

Tents pre-pitched at the summit (or halfway) camp. Hot chai and evening snacks waiting. Layer up — the temperature drops fast. Summit camp: short walk to the peak for the sunset.

  9. 6:30 – 7:00 PM

Sunset — golden hour at 5,000 ft

The sun sinks behind the western Sahyadri ridge; the sky turns gold, amber, crimson then violet. The Bhandardara reservoir glows below with Alang, Madan and Kulang silhouetted.

  10. 7:30 – 8:30 PM

    Bonfire + group activities

Campfire, songs, games and storytelling. Jackets and sleeping bags come out as it gets cold. Solo travellers very welcome; safe for solo women.

  11. 9:00 PM

    Unlimited dinner under the stars

An authentic home-cooked Maharashtrian veg dinner — dal, sabzi, chapati, rice, pickle, papad. Jain food on request. No alcohol.

  12. 10:30 PM – 12:30 AM

    Stargazing session

A guide points out the Milky Way, constellations, planets and shooting stars under near-zero light pollution. Red-light torches only.

  13. 5:00 AM (Day 2)

    Wake up — sunrise push

Summit camp: a relaxed 15-min walk up to the peak. Halfway camp: a 3:30 AM pre-dawn ascent (2–2.5 hrs) with headlamps.

  14. 6:00 – 6:45 AM

Sunrise at Kalsubai Peak (1,646 m)

A 360-degree sunrise over Ratangad, Harishchandragad, Alang, Madan, Kulang and Brahmagiri. Visit the Kalsubai Devi temple. Golden photo window 5:50–6:40 AM.

  15. 7:00 – 7:30 AM

    Breakfast + pack up camp

Hot breakfast at camp. Staff pack the tents; all waste is carried down — leave no trace.

  16. 8:00 AM

    Descent begins

Descend the same route (~2.5–3 hours). Extra care on the iron ladders going down — face the rock and grip the rails.

  17. 10:30 – 11:00 AM

    Reach Bari village — lunch

Hot lunch at base. Freshen up, then board the AC bus for Mumbai.

  18. 11:30 AM

The sunset from summit camp and then the Milky Way overhead — genuinely the best night I have had near Mumbai. Tents were already set up and dinner was unlimited and delicious.

Perfect first camping trek. The 2 PM start meant no rushing, and reaching camp right at sunset was magical. Bonfire and stargazing with the guide pointing out constellations was a highlight.

Loved it, but definitely carry a good sleeping bag — it was cold at night. The summit sunrise walk was short and so worth it. Great for solo travellers, felt very safe.

Did the Pune pickup. Smooth arrangement, warm camp staff, and the cloud sea below the camp in the morning was unreal. Will book the winter new-moon date next.
