Overview

Kalsubai, at 1,646 m (5,400 ft), is the highest peak in Maharashtra — earning it the nickname "Everest of Maharashtra." This moderate same-day trek covers roughly 6 km one way from Bari village, climbing through paddy fields, dense forest with monsoon streams and waterfalls, grassland highlands, and a final rocky stretch.

The crux of the trek is a series of five near-vertical iron ladders bolted into the cliff face — the most thrilling section of the trail. The summit rewards you with a 360-degree panorama of Bhandardara backwaters, Wilson Dam, Ratangad, Harishchandragad, Alang, Madan, Kulang and dozens more forts, plus the red-walled Kalsubai Devi temple at the top.

Travel is overnight from your chosen city, so you reach the base before dawn, summit by mid-morning, and return the same evening.

Reached the summit just as the clouds rolled in — absolutely magical. The iron ladders are thrilling but the trek leaders made us feel safe the whole way. Breakfast at the base village was hot and filling.

My first proper trek and a fantastic experience. Pickup from Dadar was on time and the overnight bus was comfortable. Tough climb in the last stretch but worth every step for that 360° view.

Well organised same-day trip. Carry enough water as there are no sources on the trail. The descent is harder on the knees than I expected, so trekking shoes are a must.

Did the night trek and watched the sunrise from the top of Maharashtra. Unreal. The Kalsubai Devi temple at the summit is a nice touch. Highly recommend going in winter for clear views.
