Overview

Ratangad is the 'Jewel of the Sahyadris' — a 4,255 ft fort built in the 14th century and captured by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in 1647, named after Goddess Ratnabai. Its most iconic feature is the Nedhe, or Eye of the Needle — a natural rock hole that perfectly frames Bhandardara's Arthur Lake far below. Natural rock-cut caves near the summit, historically used for shelter by Maratha soldiers, can sleep 25+ people — no tent required, just a sleeping bag and mat.

This 2-day, 1-night trek climbs to the fort by late afternoon in time to watch the sun set over Bhandardara from the ramparts, settles into the caves for a bonfire and hot dinner, and stays up for stargazing — the lake below reflects the Milky Way for a rare double-sky effect. The next morning brings sunrise through the Nedhe, a full circuit of all four fort gates, and a relaxed descent back to base.

8:00 – 9:15 am (Sat)
Board AC bus at Mumbai pickup points
Depart from Borivali East, Dadar East or Thane. Morning drive via NH160, with a scenic sunrise over the Western Ghats through Kasara Ghat. Camping gear is packed into duffel bags for mule/porter transport to the fort.
12:00 – 1:00 pm
Arrive Ratanwadi
Freshen up. Explore the Amruteshwar Temple. First sight of Ratangad fort towering above the village.
1:00 pm
Lunch at Ratanwadi
Full hot Maharashtrian vegetarian lunch (Jain on request). Eat well — the climb is demanding.
1:30 – 2:00 pm
Rest and gear up
Fill 3 L+ water. Sleeping bags and camping gear are sent up with mules and porters. Trek leader briefs the group on the cave campsite, Nedhe timing, sunset position and stargazing plan.
2:00 pm
Trek begins
Forest trail, Ganesh Darwaja, rocky ascent, Nedhe, fort plateau — about 4-5 hours at a relaxed pace designed to reach the campsite by sunset.
4:00 – 4:30 pm
Ganesh Darwaja and rocky section
Pass through the ancient fort gate. Steep rocky climb with iron railings — pace evenly to save energy for exploring the fort at the top.
5:00 – 5:30 pm
Nedhe — Eye of the Needle
Afternoon light makes the Nedhe view extraordinary. Sit inside the rock hole and photograph the Sahyadri peaks framed within it.
6:00 pm
Arrive fort campsite — cave or tents
Camping gear is already at the fort, dispatched via mules. Settle into the caves or tents. Evening snacks and chai are waiting — layer up immediately.
6:30 – 7:00 pm
Sunset from Ratangad fort
Watch the sun set over Bhandardara lake and the Sahyadri ridgeline as Arthur Lake glows gold then orange, with the fort ruins silhouetted against the sky.

Bonfire and group activities
Campfire inside or near the cave, with songs, stories and group games — the fort by firelight is magical and atmospheric.

Dinner at the fort
Hot Maharashtrian vegetarian dinner cooked by the camp staff, eaten inside an ancient fort cave on a cliff.

Stargazing at 4,255 ft
Zero light pollution above the Sahyadri — Milky Way overhead, constellations, planets and regular shooting stars. Bhandardara lake reflects starlight for a double-sky effect. Red-light torches only.
5:15 – 5:30 am (Sun)
Wake up — walk to sunrise point
A 15-minute walk to the highest point of the fort. Bhandardara lake catches first light as the Sahyadri turns gold.
6:00 – 6:45 am
Sunrise at Ratangad fort
Full 360° panorama: Kalsubai, Alang, Madan, Kulang, Harishchandragad, Ghanchakkar, Sandhan Valley and Bhandardara lake. Visit the Ratnabai Devi shrine at first light.
7:00 – 7:30 am
Breakfast and fort exploration
Hot breakfast on the fort. Explore all four gates and the full fort circuit if time allows. Pack up camp — all waste carried down, leave no trace.
8:30 am
Descent
Descend in full daylight, about 2.5 hours. Extra care on the scree near the Nedhe. The forest section shows waterfalls in monsoon.
11:00 – 11:30 am
Reach Ratanwadi — lunch
Lunch at base and a fuller Amruteshwar Temple visit before boarding transport home.
12:00 pm
Depart for Mumbai
Bus back via Bhandardara-Igatpuri-NH160. Arrive Mumbai approximately 5:00-6:00 pm.

How to Reach

Borivali East (SGNP Gate) – 8:00 am, Dadar East (Pritam Hotel) – 8:45 am, Thane (Teen Hath Naka) – 9:15 am.

Route: Borivali > Thane > NH160 > Kasara Ghat > Igatpuri > Ghoti > Ratanwadi, about 170 km, arriving base around noon.

The last 10-15 km road to Ratanwadi is rural and rough. There is no mobile network at Ratanwadi or beyond. The scree approach near the Nedhe requires careful, measured footing. Cave camping means shared, unheated shelter — layer up and use a proper sleeping bag. No alcohol is permitted on the trek. MMRCC rescue: 7620-230-231.
