Ratangad is the 'Jewel of the Sahyadris' — a 4,255 ft fort built in the 14th century and captured by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in 1647, named after Goddess Ratnabai. Its most iconic feature is the Nedhe, or Eye of the Needle — a natural rock hole that perfectly frames Bhandardara's Arthur Lake far below. The fort has four gates — Ganesh, Hanuman, Konkan and Trimbak Darwaja — along with ancient water cisterns, rock-cut caves and the Ratnabai Devi shrine at the summit.
This trek departs on an overnight journey to Ratanwadi and begins the ascent in pre-dawn darkness by headlamp, paced so the group reaches the Nedhe right around sunrise — Bhandardara lake glowing gold through the rock frame is one of the most spectacular sights in the Sahyadris. After exploring the summit and a hot breakfast on the fort, the group descends and heads home the same day — no overnight stay on the fort.
